Trans Duality

I hate bananas because of their texture, the fibrous almost hairy insides, and of course the taste. However, I love kiwis, and eat them whole, even though they are hairy.
I’m talking about duality.
Duality is important to me, and for trans people especially, because of how hard it is to be trans in the UK, and around the world. 2025 has been one of the worst years in terms of rights rollbacks and smear campaigns.

It is of course not unprecedented, but it is a severe environment that we are tasked to live in. It is bleak and has created an existence that is harsh on trans people’s overall health.
It can feel difficult to experience wins, excitement, and personal triumphs. But, just because things are tough for trans people right now, doesn’t mean you can’t seek and experience joy!

This brings me back to duality. We suffer under an inept government, a biased Supreme Court, stupid decisions made by music festivals, and so many more transgressions forced upon us. Yet we can also experience joy.
I have felt guilt for the small wins that I have had over the past few months. Questioning if I am doing enough, trying hard enough for the community. This guilt cycle doesn’t consider duality.

It is vital that we - the trans community - see our existence, joy in the face of hostility, as an act of resistance. Experiencing joy in spite of the mess created by others is vital when it comes to us all not only surviving but thriving.
So remember the importance of duality when it comes to joy!

Your take on duality really hits — reminds me how Tyler the Creator embraced both vulnerability and confidence with his Igor persona. That’s why I love the Tyler the Creator Igor Suit, it symbolizes that same balance of joy and struggle.
