What’s Nuance got to do with it?

The hostility online is veraciously vicious.
I think many of us are seeing simple interactions being read erroneously, creating conflict that wildly misses the point that the original media sought to make.
The biggest issue online is the lack of nuance.
In an age where attention span is at an all time low, content has to grab attention in under three seconds, otherwise you may as well not bother. In the pull-down to refresh era, this means vital nuance is simply lost.

It creates an environment where people are held to immensely complex high standards within an industry that praises non-complex ideas. The dichotomy of the online environment is leading to a lot of wasted effort.
Nuance is the missing link online.
Nuance is the depth many issues need.
Nuance is the difference between being understood and being seen as offensive.
Nuance is the difference between being appreciated and being hated.

Please don’t get it twisted, nuance isn’t a ten-step critique of every piece of information we come across, but it does ask of us one thing: to engage some common sense and a minute of attention.
Without Nuance, anyone can twist our intentions to create narratives that are simply not there.
Without nuance, the internet simply becomes who can shout the loudest.
Without nuance, the most palatable version of a narrative becomes the only narrative.
Without nuance, misinformation breeds like rabbits.

So how do we bring back nuance? Simply put, I think we need to engage in some active engagement.

Be expansive in your opinions instead of narrow and dismissive..
In a world that demands more of us, why not give more attention to what we consume online?
After all, a little nuance never hurt.
