30 Life Lessons

I turn 31 next week.
My 30th year was something I feared, stressed about, and fretted over for months. I made it into such a big deal that the reality of being 30 was such an anticlimax, it was nothing to worry about.
Instead, my 30th year was a year of self-reflection, learning a new sense of peace with who I am and what I do. Life isn’t all plain sailing, you know me, I never sugar coat it. Yet this year, more than before, I have found clarity that has maybe been lacking previously.
30 has ushered in a renewed sense of self and drive. Which means I am looking forward to being 31. What a nice thing to be able to say!
So, in no particular order, here are 30 little nuggets of wisdom I humbly offer you that I have absorbed over the past three decades.
Bodies are neutral - not good or bad.
Food is also neutral - and not something we need to earn.
Yes, exercise does make you feel good.
Rest is not earned either - take it or your body will force you.
Napping is good for you.
Being sober doesn’t make me better than you.
Drinking alcohol doesn’t make you more fun than me!
Saying yes when you don’t want to do something is never a good idea.
No is a full sentence.
Platonic love is important.
Experience things you don’t like - you might be surprised.
Discomfort can make the best change.
If you fall in love with clothes or shoes - try and find it on Vinted/eBay/Depop/Vestiare first.
Get comfy being wrong.
Stand up for what is right.
Maintaining what you have will save you money. Get shoes resoled, coats dry cleaned, and get clothes altered or mended.
Don’t be afraid of rejection - ask and see what happens!
Boundaries are a good thing!
No one has enough to time to be consumed with thoughts of you - so it’s probably safe to assume they’re not thinking about you negatively all the time!
If you want to spend time with someone - make plans with them!
Disappointments happen, take the time to feel them, and then move forwards.
You don’t need to read a certain amount of books a year - pick your own pace.
Rewear that outfit!
You probably need to drink more water!
You can always take an advocate with you to appointments to ensure that you are listened to.
Tell the people you love, that you love them, don’t assume they know.
Wear SPF every day.
Nothing is high or low brow - if you enjoy it - enjoy it!
It can be hard, but try and look for joy every day.
Never stop learning.
