Being Different: 2 Years of benpechey.com

I once read that if you are different you will always be lonely. I have always felt slightly outside our society’s perceptions of normality, but this is one of the reasons I started my website 2 years ago today. As I write this I believe that my difference has given me a unique stance and thought production, that I have used to create my blog. So to the point I mentioned at the opening of this post; I have some thoughts.

I essentially agree there are aspects of being different that does exclude you from certain things, and perhaps many things in life are not tailored to you. Obviously, when you are different you are treated differentley, sometimes facing hostility or perhaps just feeling that because you don’t fit a mould, you aren’t considered at all. You don’t have the same experiences as many other people, with a resultant change in your character, but perhaps changes that make you more interesting and special.

That is what I believe I have used to my advantage in writing for my website, and in doing so has afforded me other opportunities. I think that many people confuse an alternative thought process and thus perhaps a less mainstream choice, as unpopularity. However, how dull would it be if we all thought the same things and acted in the same ways? I may have less in common with some people, but perhaps I don’t want to be liked by those people. Mainstream success certainly is a great thing, but perhaps it is better to be loved by a few than to be liked by many.

What I have carved out is my little corner of the internet, and I am very happy about that. My blog has brought me so much confidence, passion and drive. I owe so much of this, of course to the vote to leave the European Union. The devastation I felt upon seeing that Britain had chosen to leave, made me realise that nothing in life was guaranteed and that if I wanted something I would have to go out and get it. I spent a month from the 23rd of June to July the 26th planning and building my blog, and thus benpechey.com was born.

I’m not lonely for being different, I’m happy. I have strong bonds with the people that I’m close with, whom I really respect and cherish. I have found out that shared differences allow you to reach out and connect, realising that maybe someone went through similar things to you; proves that the problems you faced are societal and not personal. It also allows you to acknowledge how important the struggles were to your development.

I love who I am, and who I have become as a person, my gender identity and sexuality have lead me to feel different, but I can honestly say I wouldn’t want to be any other way! I have adored bringing my unique take on life to benpechey.com for the last 2 years, and I hope to continue to do so.

Thank you to all the people that have supported me, and to my amazing Mother who has without fail read every post I have ever written. I also owe the people who cast aspersions on the idea of a blog and posting pictures of myself on the internet, because you made me try harder and refine my outputs, so thank you so much.

As always THANK YOU for taking the time to read this, I really appreciate it. I hope you enjoyed my 2nd Year Anniversary post, and as always I will be back next week. Until then, have a great week 🌸 xx
