Closing the Loop

Do you have ADHD?

Probably - it’s incredibly under-diagnosed - despite what the media wants you to believe.

I have ADHD, and I’m currently trying to cope because, believe it or not, a neurodevelopmental disorder can have a massive impact on your life.

Let’s get into it.

Currently, I have an endless list of tasks that weighs me down and, honestly, causes me to slump into a state of all emotions.

Nothing is getting done.

I came across the concept of closing the loop as an effective tool for managing the impacts of ADHD and executive dysfunction.

Closing the loop means ending as many small tasks as possible. Think of a computer with 87 tabs open, it’s running slowly, closing programs down unexpectedly, overheating, and crashing. We are the computer. The open loops are the tabs.

To clear some of the cognitive lag that ADHD can cause, we have to close the loops.

The open loops I need to close:

- Finish Vinted uploads

- Repair jewellery

- Put boots away

- Return trousers to Sainsbury's

- Lock in my schedule for a day in London

- Do the load of washing that’s been in the machine for days

It’s probably an hour of attention, if that. Just like closing the tabs on my computer, I’ve freed up the part of my brain that lets me do things. It seems really simple, and it is, but that doesn’t mean it is easy to work with an ADHD brain.

Maybe you need to try closing some loops.
