My Gender is Not Wrong!

When to comes to gender, we need to get one thing straight…

I’m Ben Pechey, award winning non-binary & intersex author, presenter, consultant and educator. Basically what that intro states, is I know my stuff, okay?

There is a lot of noise about gender, transness, and the idea of trans being a radical ideology. But at its core, the subject on a personal level is just that, super personal.

So here is the filling of the sandwich.

You don’t get to tell me I am wrong about my gender.

You have no right to tell me my gender is wrong.

I don’t get to tell you, that you are wrong about your gender.

Even as an expert, I have no right to tell you that your gender is wrong.

You may have a set idea of what gender means to you, and where you sit within that. That may very well diverge from my idea of gender, and how I sit within it. BUT, this doesn’t make me wrong. It also doesn’t make you wrong either.

Two things can be true, actually multiple things can be, multitudes if you will.

Let’s come back to the noise that is all about gender, transness, and the idea of trans being a radical ideology. That is not about you, or me. Whilst it may be very shouty, it doesn’t make it right.

The critics, may be some of the loudest, but it doesn’t make them right about you. They will never be right about you. Gender is such a personal and subjective thing, only you get to rule on what it means to you.
