Put the Unity back into Community

June marks the start of the 2025’s Pride season.

Pride this year feels hostile, hectic, and uncertain. With LGBTQIA+ rights around the world taking a monumental hit, this year standing up for the community feels more urgent than ever before.

But, I should stress, that all is not lost, I don’t want you to give up. Instead I want you to see the power of community. I think it is very possible to feel utterly devastated by the rollback of rights and to see a world filled with hate and no longer see a place for yourself in it anymore.

Yet, even in the most challenging year I have seen as a trans+ person, the community continues to show up, defiantly, powerfully, and just like a sunrise, I can’t help but feel comforted by it.

Juno Dawson repeated something she’d heard to me when I saw her at the Attitude 101 awards earlier this year, ‘we need to put the unity back into the community’. The more I look, the more time I spend solely with our community, I can really see immense efforts to put unity back into the community. One thing about crisis' it really does show you who your friends are, and I think of the trans community as a network of friends.

So from this, it is possible to build resilience, because it shows us that the fight is a burden borne by all of us, and so we do not have to be at the coalface every single day. Instead, show up when you can, practice rest when you can’t because the community will continue to be there.

So this Pride in whatever way feels possible for you, make sure you are putting the unity back into community.
