Rest is a Necessary act for 2026

I have a tricky relationship with rest.
It’s something that we all need. I know it’s not something that’s earned, deserved, or even a treat. Rest is not the same as a holiday; they represent very different things.
So, back to my tricky relationship with rest.
Rest, it often creeps up on me, because I abuse the balance, and before I know it, I’m forced to rest. Whether I like it or not, the meaty lump inside my skull refuses to cooperate, and thus, rest I must.

At these times, I often find myself stuck in bed for extended periods, exhausted and sad. Sometimes I use that to beat myself up with, which in reality only makes things worse.
At times like this, I have to remind myself that we’ve all been raised to believe worth is tied to productivity. This doesn’t leave room for compassion. It doesn't acknowledge just how hard life is at the moment.

It can be even harder because we’re never very far from a screen full of demands. Emails, DMs, texts, and calls. Not answering is not seen as me prioritising myself, but instead is seen as rudeness, ignoring, and prompts multiple follow-ups and chasing.
I don’t begrudge anyone trying to contact me, but I do begrudge it when it comes at the cost of my peace and rest.

Rest is not something to be shoehorned in; if we get the chance, it’s non-negotiable.
Rest means taking time away.
Rest means not being bombarded by bad news.
Rest means refilling your cup.
Rest means actually resting.
Rest means time for a hobby or two.
Rest means catching up on your reading.
Rest means whatever you want it to mean.
So, are you going to practice actual rest?
