Take a PJ Day

Writer's picture: Ben PecheyBen Pechey

Everyone needs a day where nothing happens.

I call these days PJ days - days where the rules, routines, and rhythms of our lives get interrupted. It means doing as little as possible, it means very probably not getting dressed, staying in your PJs, and having zero pressures placed on you.

But why is this important?

When we find ourselves responding to stress, anxiety, and pressure, many of us mention that we just need a break. A holiday. Some time away. A break to the standard routines we normally feel swept up by, a tide of responsibility that causes mental resistance.

We can't take continual holidays, even though that would be amazing, what can we do in the meantime?

Enter the PJ day, to offer you a place to catch your breath, take in the scenery, and find balance in an existence that doesn’t always feel anywhere near pleasurable enough.

I think about the Enya album a Day Without Rain, the title song is an instrumental number. It was inspired by the heavy rainfall of Ireland, and after weeks of constant rain, a day where the rain stopped and the sun shone. Enya said it inspired her to write, for the peaceful mood and calm the day provided.

A PJ day is not as profound as Enya's Day Without Rain, but it has the exact sentiment. A day where the clouds can break, and we can see sun, is the peace we need to infuse into a system that doesn’t prioritise individuals.

A day of rest won’t change anything fundamentally - but it will give your body a chance to breathe - and provide time for perspective to form, which only comes from resting. I rely on them to help me, and in the spirit of caring for others, I give you the PJ day as a reminder to look after yourself.

So perhaps you need to take a PJ day, you’ll never know the benefit unless you try…
